LGUs to audit Infrastructures in their AORs

Local Government Units will find time to appraise buildings and other structures in their areas of responsibility as a step towards disaster preparedness. A team consisting of engineers and planners will be led by their local chief executives to eventually classify infrastructures for purposes of keeping the occupants and users safe.

This was a general commitment made by the 48 participants to the Seminar Workshop on Infrastructure Audit for LGUs in the Cordillera Administrative Region conducted at Ridgewood Hotel, Baguio City on November 6-9,  2012 by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Speakers in the four-day seminar workshop were seasoned practitioners of structural and civil engineering representing the DILG Office of Project Development Services (OPDS), Association of Structural Engineers in the Philippines (ASEP), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE). Scientists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhilVOLCS)  and Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (MGB DENR) were also speakers and served as panelists during the open forums.

They discussed assessment of structures, possible hazards and methods of risk prevention and mitigation. The participants, who were municipal, provincial engineers, planning and development coordinators and local government operations officers, also had the chance to actually assess and audit three different kinds of buildings in the DILG CAR compound aside from consulting with the experts on structural engineering.

Seminar workshops like this Infrastructure Audit support Republic Act 10121 also known as “An Act Strengthening the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System, providing for the national disaster risk reduction and management framework and institutionalizing the national disaster risk reduction and management plan.”
