OP gives assistance to families of Benguet vehicular accident victim

BAGUIO CITY, Sept. 22 (PIA) - - Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas and Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda  arrived in this city  on September 22  to visit  and give assistance  to  the survivors and the  bereaved families of the victims in the vehicular accident in Buguias, Benguet last September 9 killing 12  high school students   and the driver. Roxas and Lacierda first  visited two of the recovering survivors at the Baguio General  Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) where they were joined by Baguio and Benguet officials and national and local media practitioners.

 

 

They then proceeded  to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Training Center to meet with the bereaved families of the 13 victims who perished in the accident. Roxas  said they were here under the directive of President Benigno Aquino III who is  on official trip  abroad. In his message read by Roxas, Aquino  in behalf of the Filipino people, expressed his wholehearted sympathy to the family of those who  were injured and died in the accident, as he also thanked those  who extended help and assistance.

 

 

The President also assured that the government through the various agencies and offices will continue to provide support and for the Philippine National Police to thoroughly conduct an investigation on the tragic accident. “Ang atin pong layunin ay makapaglatag ng hakbang upang masigurong hindi na mauulit ang ganitong insidente (Our objective here is to layout policies that would ensure that similar accident will not happen again)”,  he stated.

 

 

Roxas and Lacierda also spearheaded the distribution of financial assistance to the families. Each victim’s family received P108,000 assistance from the Office of the President. It can be recalled that   13  people, 12 of them students,   while three others  survived when a Ford Fierra vehicle with plate number  ABF 436  fell into a more than 300 feet ravine along Sitio Bangbangayen in Poblacion, Buguias at around 4:30 PM on Sept. 9.

 

 

In behalf of the families, Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan, expressed gratitude to the national government. He also handed to Roxas an incident report of the accident  as well as a report on the damages brought by Typhoon Mario in the province of Benguet. Fongwan was joined by Benguet Congressman Ronald Cosalan, Baguio City Congressman Nicasio Aliping Jr. and Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Police Regional Office Cordillera Director Isagani Nerez and officials from the regional offices of DILG and DSWD. After the meeting, Roxas and party flew to the Ilocos Region to continue their Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis on the damages wrought by typhoons  Luis and Mario.
